The school day

Hometime

The end of the school day, when children are collected. Letters and the calendar use it for any collection time, like "11:30 hometime" on the last day of term.

Snack and lunch

Snack is the short mid-morning food break, and the school provides some of the food. Lunch is the main meal in the middle of the day, and each family provides it.

Term

A block of the school year. Term 1 runs to mid-December; Term 2 begins in January.

Mid-term break · half-term

The short holiday in the middle of a term. This year they fall in October and February.

Inservice day · staff training day

A day with no school for children while the staff train together. The calendar marks these as "no school for children".

ASA · after-school activity

The after-school clubs, 3 to 4pm. Sign-up lives on the Activities page.

An older term you may still hear. At ELC these are called ASAs: if a letter says ECA, read it as ASA.

Armonia

The music programme, with drama and dance performance alongside it. Currently Tuesday and Thursday, 3 to 4pm.

Project

An extended investigation a class follows for weeks or months, at the heart of ELC's Reggio-inspired approach. When a letter says "the Project", it means this shared piece of work.

The school's football club, and the first competitive sport with open sign-up.

People and places

K1 and K2

The two kindergarten year groups: K1 first, then K2, then up to Y1.

DSL · designated safeguarding lead

The trained staff member who receives and acts on any concern about a child's safety. The report a concern page explains the route.

Atelier

Atrium

The central gathering space at The City School, used for parent sessions and events.

Parent Teacher Conferences

One-to-one meetings about your child. "Progress" is the mid-term check-in; "Report Card" comes with the written report. Children stay home on these days.
